In recent years, astronomers have witnessed extraordinary phenomena in the sky. Among them, the interstellar object 3I/Atlas stands out, a traveler that does not belong to our solar system and has sparked fascination in both scientists and the public.

What is 3I/Atlas?
The term 3I indicates it is the third interstellar object discovered after 'Oumuamua (1I/2017 U1) and the comet Borisov (2I/2019 Q4). The word Atlas comes from the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, which detected it. It is a celestial body moving at high speed, with a trajectory proving it comes from interstellar space, beyond the gravitational influence of our Sun.

Discovery
3I/Atlas was spotted thanks to telescopes monitoring near-Earth objects. It was classified as having a hyperbolic orbit, unmistakable evidence that it is not bound to the solar system but only passing through.

Characteristics
1- Its speed is far higher than that of a typical solar system comet.
2- It has an open trajectory, meaning it will not be captured by the Sun's gravity.
3- Its size and composition remain under study, but scientists suspect it resembles an icy comet nucleus.

Importance and relevance
The passage of 3I/Atlas matters because:
a) It provides insight into material found in other planetary systems.
b) It helps compare how comets form and evolve beyond our solar neighborhood.
c) It offers clues about the natural exchange of matter between stars.

Is it similar to the other interstellar objects?
Compared with 'Oumuamua, with its elongated and puzzling shape, and Borisov, more like a classic comet, 3I/Atlas shares traits with both. It shows cometary activity but also has unique orbital features. This suggests that each interstellar object is singular and valuable for research.

A window to the universe
Every interstellar discovery reminds us that the cosmos is dynamic and that fragments from distant stars can reach us. Observing 3I/Atlas means looking at a piece of cosmic history that has traveled for millions of years to briefly meet humanity.
