What is the history of the Ataulfo Mango?

At the beginning of the 1960's, a group of researchers promoted by the government undertook the task of carrying out a study to understand the types of mango trees in the coffee-growing area of Chiapas in Mexico. Curiously, on a property owned by Mr. Ataulfo Morales Gordillo there were around five Creole mango trees, with a very special flavor. This property we are talking about had already had different owners before, and it is difficult to know who planted them or how these five mango trees were born. The researchers pointed out that with the natural pollination process of these trees, this type of mango with such a special flavor was born, which was finally registered in the census of that time.

In the end, Eng. Héctor Cano Flores arrives in the southern region of Chiapas to boost the economy of coffee crops in the Soconusco area in Chiapas, also by government institutions. Cano Flores discovered this tree in 1963 with this type of mango with its characteristic flavor, and thanks to his business vision he became the great promoter of the Ataulfo mango in the sixties since the coffee business had difficulties in marketing it. . Cano Flores, through his experiments and research with grafts of this plant, developed the cultivation of this type of mango as an alternative to coffee, which in its first harvests already received the name Mango Ataulfo in honor of the owner of the property where these trees they were found. Until today, countries such as Brazil, Peru, Guatemala and Ecuador support part of their economy with the commercialization of this fruit, taking this food of Mexican origin to the world level.

The mango varieties that grow on American soil are mostly yellow, where the Ataulfo mango already occupies a very important place in the economy of several countries.
