Huizache Caimanero

Located in the south of Sinaloa, it has become a tradition for hundreds or thousands of tourists from the region and also foreign tourists. It is a shrimp area by tradition and generates thousands of direct and indirect jobs, in addition to the beach and restaurant area.

The Huizache Caimanero Lagoon System, located in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, is an ecosystem of great ecological and economic importance. However, in recent years, the system has suffered a series of threats that put its conservation at risk. The system is made up of a series of lagoons, estuaries and mangroves that extend over 48 thousand acres. It is an important feeding and resting site for migratory birds, such as the American white heron, pink flamingo, and American white pelican. It is also an important refuge for fish, crustaceans and mollusks, which are a source of food for local communities.

Among the main threats facing the system are pollution, overfishing and climate change. Pollution, mainly from wastewater and agrochemicals, is affecting water quality and the health of ecosystems. In fact, in previous years, scenes of mortality of fish and species that live there have been detected. Overfishing is reducing populations of fish, crustaceans such as shrimp and other natural resources. Climate change is causing a considerable increase in water temperature, affecting the natural cycle of fishing species, which represent a very important activity in the southern area of ??Sinaloa (Rosario, Escuinapa).

The Caimanero Zone a Tradition

Some actions that can be implemented to protect the system include:

1-Reduce pollution: Measures must be implemented to treat wastewater and agrochemicals before they reach the system.

2- Regulate fishing: Fishing quotas must be established to avoid overfishing, however, this has been complicated because organized crime has taken over control and access to fishing based on threats and extortion.

3- Involve local communities: Environmental education and awareness projects should be promoted so that local communities understand the importance of system conservation.

The Huizache-Caimanero Lagoon System is an ecosystem of great value for Mexico and the world. It is important to take urgent measures to protect it and ensure its conservation for future generations.
