What is an echidna? Echidnas are monotreme mammals, a group of unique egg-laying animals. They are famous for their peculiar appearance: a body covered in spikes, a long, sticky snout, and an extremely long tongue. These animals are found mainly in Australia and New Guinea.

Characteristics of Echidnas
Spikes: Their body is covered in spikes that serve as protection against predators.

a) Long-beaked echidnas: These species, found mainly in New Guinea, are critically endangered. Habitat loss, hunting, and other human activities have drastically reduced their populations.
b) Short-beaked echidna: This species, common in Australia, is in a more stable situation and is not considered endangered at present.

Tongue: Their tongue is very long and sticky, perfect for capturing insects.
Smell: Their sense of smell is highly developed, which helps them find food.
Electroreception: They can detect weak electrical fields generated by their prey.
