Endemic salamanders are salamander species that are found exclusively in one specific place in the world and nowhere else. This means that their geographic distribution is limited to a specific region, such as a country, province, or even a smaller area.

What is an axolotl? The Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a species of salamander endemic to the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico City. It is famous for its ability to regenerate limbs, organs, and even parts of its brain, making it a model organism for scientific research.

Unique Features
a) Neoteny: One of the most distinctive features of the axolotl is neoteny, that is, it retains its larval characteristics throughout its life, even into adulthood. This means that it maintains external gills, a caudal fin, and smooth skin.
b) Regeneration: Its ability to regenerate damaged tissue is amazing. It can regenerate limbs, internal organs, and parts of its heart and brain.
c) Variety of colors: Although the wild axolotl is usually dark in color, various mutations have developed in captivity that have given rise to a wide range of colors, from white to pink or gold.

Habitat
The axolotl is endemic to the Xochimilco canals, a system of canals and chinampas located in the south of Mexico City. However, due to pollution, the introduction of invasive species, and the loss of its natural habitat, axolotl populations have declined dramatically.

Food
The axolotl is carnivorous and its diet is based mainly on small aquatic invertebrates, such as worms, insect larvae, and crustaceans. In captivity, it feeds on earthworms, mosquito larvae, and fish foods.

Reproduction
The axolotl reproduces externally. The female lays a large number of eggs that the male fertilizes externally. The eggs hatch in about 10-14 days and the larvae develop rapidly.

Conservation
The Mexican axolotl is critically endangered. The main threats they face are habitat loss, water pollution, the introduction of invasive species, and overexploitation.

How can you help?
1-Spread information: Share this article and other resources about the axolotl to raise awareness about its situation.
2-Visit Xochimilco responsibly: If you visit Xochimilco, avoid throwing trash into the water and do not buy axolotl products.
3-Support conservation projects: Find and support organizations that work to protect the axolotl and its habitat.

The axolotl is a symbol of Mexico's biodiversity. It is our responsibility to protect it for future generations.
