As its name suggests, the Ganges shark is found mainly in the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Mahanadi rivers, as well as other smaller rivers in the region. It prefers the deeper, calmer parts of the rivers, where it finds abundant food and shelter.
It is a medium-sized shark, which can reach 2 metres in length, with a robust body and a broad head. Its colouring varies from dark grey to brown, allowing it to camouflage itself in the murky waters of the rivers.
The Ganges shark's diet is varied and consists mainly of fish, crustaceans and small aquatic mammals. Its ability to detect prey in murky waters is exceptional, thanks to its highly developed senses.

The Ganges shark's reproduction is ovoviviparous, meaning that the eggs develop inside the mother's body until the pups are ready to be born. Little is known about its life cycle and reproduction rate, making its conservation difficult.

Threats and Conservation
The Ganges shark is critically endangered due to various threats:
Overfishing: Accidental capture in fishing nets and targeted fishing are the main causes of its decline.
Habitat degradation: River pollution, dam construction and sedimentation are destroying its natural habitat.
Loss of genetic diversity: Small populations and lack of connectivity between them have reduced the genetic diversity of the species, making it more vulnerable to diseases and environmental changes.

To conserve the Ganges shark, various initiatives are being undertaken, such as the creation of marine protected areas, regulation of fishing and awareness-raising among local communities. However, much greater effort is needed to ensure the survival of this unique species.
Importance of Conservation The Ganges shark is an apex predator in its ecosystem and plays a fundamental role in maintaining the ecological balance of rivers. Its disappearance would have negative consequences for all aquatic biodiversity.
