Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and Calavera

Top tracks you must hear from the album calavera. Albums to listen to before you die. By Aaron Salazar

8. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (LFC). “Fabulosos Calavera” (1997). It was the summer of 1997 when the eighth album by this prolific Argentine band was released. Many may remember them for their ska, reggae, salsa, cumbia, and other tropical-Latin rhythms. However, with “Fabulosos Calavera,” the group embraced experimentation and a fusion of rhythms, gifting us with an interesting eclectic mix encompassing hardcore, jazz, funk, and rock (without neglecting Latin sounds), which is definitely worth enjoying at full volume.

Why Fabulosos Calavera remains a masterpiece of latin rock?

The lyrics are more personal and existential than on their previous albums, most of them related to the theme of death. The album opens with “El muerto” (The Dead Man), a dark song where Ariel Minimal's guitar (who debuted with LFC on this album) is already quite punchy. Next comes “Surfer Calavera,” with a very interesting Latin punk rhythm, followed by “Carnicero de Giles/Sueño,” where even the guttural vocals of legendary bassist Flavio Cianciarulo stand out. Then come “Sabato,” “Howen,” and “A amigo J.V.,” where the rhythm relaxes with some great jazz. A particularly special track is “Hoy Lloré Canción,” a collaboration with salsa icon Rubén Blades, followed by “Calaveras y Diablitos,” with an elegant reggae sound that invites us to unwind. “Niño Diamante” also stands out, where Vicentico demonstrates his vocal potential and the originality of his timbre. The album closes with the frenetic “Piazola” and the intriguing “Amnesia,” where its rhythmic shifts take us from chaos to calm.

A special album to enjoy during this Holy Week season, perhaps with a cold beer and the sunset, accompanied by the rhythms of “Fabulosos Calavera.” And I close this review by reminding you that, as the lyrics of "Calaveras y diablitos" say: "Tombs are for the dead, flowers are for feeling good, life is for enjoying, life is for living it better"
