An international team of scientists has identified the genetic origin of a blood antigen called AnWj. This antigen had been known for decades, but its genetic basis was a mystery. Thanks to this new research, a new blood group system called MAL (Myelin Protein and Lymphocyte) has been established, making it the 47th to be discovered.

MAL Blood Group: Rare and Unique Blood Type

Why is this discovery important?
1- It solves a decades-old enigma: The AnWj antigen was identified in 1972, but its genetic nature has long been a puzzle. This new finding finally provides an explanation.
2- It expands our knowledge about blood: Each new discovery about blood groups brings us closer to a more complete understanding of human genetic diversity and how our immune system works.

It improves blood transfusions: Knowing the different blood groups is essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of transfusions. This new discovery could help identify more compatible donors and reduce the risk of adverse reactions.

ABO System Rh Factor Other Antigens
A Positive (+) MAL, others
A Negative (-) MAL, others
B Positive (+) MAL, others
B Negative (-) MAL, others
AB Positive (+) MAL, others
AB Negative (-) MAL, others
O Positive (+) MAL, others
O Negative (-) MAL, others
What does this new blood group mean for health?
a) Most people have it: It is estimated that more than 99.9% of the population has the AnWj antigen, which means that they are positive for the MAL blood group.
b) Importance in rare cases: Although it is very common, the absence of the AnWj antigen can have implications in specific cases, such as during pregnancy or in people with certain diseases.
