Rickettsia is a group of bacteria mainly transmitted by ticks, fleas and lice. These infections, known as rickettsioses, have been reported worldwide and pose a serious health threat. The challenge is that symptoms often resemble those of common illnesses, delaying medical attention.

Main symptoms:
1- High fever and chills
2- Severe headache
3- Muscle and joint pain
4- Skin rashes (red or pink spots)
5- Nausea and general discomfort
6- In severe cases, neurological or kidney complications

Transmission:
Infection occurs when a tick or insect carrying the bacteria bites a human. Not all bites transmit the disease, but the risk increases in rural areas or where infected animals are present.

Prevention:
a) Avoid walking in tall grass without protection.
b) Use repellents with DEET or permethrin on clothes and skin.
c) Carefully check the skin after being outdoors.
d) Keep pets free of ticks with veterinary products.
e) Wear light-colored long clothing to detect insects easily.

Diagnosis and treatment:
Early diagnosis is crucial, as delays may worsen the infection. Doctors usually confirm rickettsiosis through blood tests and clinical examination. The most prescribed antibiotic is doxycycline, considered the first-line treatment even for children and pregnant women under medical supervision.

Impact and relevance:
Rickettsia remains a challenge in Latin America, Asia and Africa. In Mexico, recurrent outbreaks have been documented in states such as Baja California and Sonora. Preventive education and early treatment access are essential to reduce mortality.

Rickettsiosis highlights the value of prevention and awareness. Protecting yourself from a single bite can mean staying healthy instead of facing a life-threatening disease.
