Baja California Sur, Mexico, is home to one of the most iconic and enigmatic rock formations in the entire country: the Hongo de Balandra.

The Balandra Stone or Balandra Mushroom, this peculiar structure, the result of millions of years of geological processes, has become a tourist icon and a symbol of the natural beauty of the peninsula.

How was the Balandra Mushroom formed?
The origin of the Balandra Mushroom is found in differential erosion, a geological process that occurs when different types of rocks wear away at different speeds. The constant action of wind, waves and rainwater has sculpted this unique figure over millennia, which resembles a giant mushroom. The upper part, more resistant, has resisted erosion better than the base, creating this characteristic contrast.

Characteristics of the Balandra Mushroom
Location: It is located on Balandra Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Baja California Sur. Balandra Beach is located on Carretera a Pichilingue KM 7, HWY 11, Tecolote, 23040 La Paz, B.C.S., Mexico. It is a panoramic white sand coastline with crystal clear, protected waters and low hills in the background. It has a 4.8 star rating on Google Maps.
Material: It is composed primarily of sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone and limestone.
Dimensions: Its exact dimensions vary over time due to ongoing erosion, but it is estimated to be several meters high.
Shape: Its distinctive shape, reminiscent of a mushroom, is the result of differential erosion.

Ecological importance
It is a habitat for various marine species and a fragile ecosystem that must be protected. The beauty and uniqueness of the Balandra Mushroom have made it one of the main tourist attractions in Baja California Sur. Thousands of visitors come every year to admire this natural wonder and enjoy the activities that the area offers, such as snorkeling, kayaking and bird watching.

Recommendations for visiting the Balandra Mushroom
Avoid leaving trash and do not climb on the rock formation to preserve it. Unfortunately in 1989 a group of tourists climbed on the mushroom which caused it to collapse. Of course, the situation alarmed the authorities who began to make efforts to raise the iconic symbol of the beautiful beach. It was not until 1993 that engineers carried out the restoration of the rock and, with the help of quite heavy machinery, they managed to lift it and put it back in its place. The operation was not at all easy because, naturally, "El Hongo" weighs many tons. For this reason, when tourists visit the rock they have to follow a series of protocols, in order to take care of it and also take care of themselves. Today it is not unusual to see long lines in Balandra of people who want to take photos next to the stone, since it is an icon of Baja California Sur.

Visit during low tide...
Low tide is the best time to appreciate the beauty of Balandra's Mushroom. Use sunscreen and a hat as the sun can be intense in the area. Bring water and snacks: There are not many services available on the beach.
