When summer arrives, some people seem to be a magnet for mosquitoes. While some enjoy an evening outdoors without trouble, others end up covered in bites. But why do mosquitoes prefer certain individuals?
1- Body odor
Each person gives off a unique blend of sweat, bacteria, and natural chemicals. Mosquitoes have receptors that detect compounds such as lactic acid, which is more common in people after exercise or those with a faster metabolism.
2- Carbon dioxide
Mosquitoes locate their targets by detecting CO2 in our breath. Those who breathe harder, such as athletes or individuals with larger body mass, are easier to detect from a distance.

3- Blood type
Studies suggest that people with blood type O are more attractive to mosquitoes compared to types A or B. While not a definitive factor, it does influence their preference.
4- Skin temperature
Mosquitoes are attracted to body heat. If the skin is warmer due to climate, exercise, or even hormonal changes, the chances of being bitten increase.
5- Perfumes and clothing
Sweet fragrances, floral soaps, and dark-colored clothing can also make someone stand out more to mosquitoes.
According to research from the CDC, prevention is key: using repellents, wearing light-colored clothing, and covering skin are effective ways to reduce risk. Interestingly, each person carries a unique chemical signature that mosquitoes seem to identify almost like a radar.
