Historic White Smoke: Robert Prevost Elected as Pope Leo XIV.
This May 8, 2025, the Vatican witnessed a historic moment as white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new pope. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old native of Chicago, was chosen as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, adopting the name Pope Leo XIV. This marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy, a significant milestone in the Church's 2,000-year history.
The Conclave and Election Process
The papal conclave commenced on May 7, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. A total of 133 cardinal electors convened in the Sistine Chapel, engaging in a series of secret ballots. On the second day, during the fourth round of voting, Cardinal Prevost secured the requisite two-thirds majority, leading to the traditional announcement of "Habemus Papam" from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
